There are a number of RSPB nature reserves within easy striking distance of Esgair Cottages.

About 16 miles from Esgair, the two reserves at Mawdach Valley offer beautiful scenery and woodland walks .

Directions to the reserves can be obtained from a sign outside of the Information Centre, 2 miles/3.2 km west of Dolgellau on the A493 next to the toll bridge at Penmaenpool.

Also about 16 miles from Esgair is the RSPB Ynys-hir Nature Reserve.  Links to associated websites listed below.  The visitor centre is signposted from Eglwys-fach, 1 mile/1.6 km off A487.

  • Parts of the oakwood date from the 17th Century.
  • About 100 pairs of pied flycatchers nest in special boxes in the woodland.
  • Thirteen species of dragonfly, 26 species of butterfly and 300 species of moth have been recorded here.
  • The reserve is open all year round from 9 am to 9 pm or sunset, whichever is earlier.

About 15+  miles from Esgair in the other direction and just outside the national park is the RSPB  Lake Vyrnwy Nature Reserve.  10 miles west of Llanfyllin via the B4393 to Llanwddyn.  With disabled facilities and hide accessible to wheelchair users.
